01. THE LONG WINTER

written by zevran ( he / him, 18 ) advanced literate, 10+ years of writing experience.

lyarra stark ; the lone wolf. hello! lyarra is a character that i created for my fanfic (the long winter)! her information is listed in these links, (as well as the fanfiction itself)!

^^ link to other button for when you are done reading.this is her storyline following the fanfic (based off of the show), so it is very much in progress! it may change over time as i work to finish the story.

pre-season one: lyarra stark is born only minutes after lyanna. the two were virtually indentical in everything but name. lyarra was a quiet, but curious child. she spent most of her time with her youngest siblings, if she was not trailing after brandon. at age 10, lyarra joins her family on a visit to riverrun. there, she meets hoster tully's ward – petyr baelish. petyr quickly becomes her first, and only friend. this creates animosity between her and lysa (as well as her and edmure, though that is more one-sided than anything). the two don't see one another again for many years, and everytime she wrote him — lysa (unknowingly to lyarra) would burn her letters.lyarra does not leave winterfell again until the tourney at harrenhal. most of her time is spent alongside benjen, thus missing lyanna's interactions with rhaegar. it's at the tourney at harrenhal that she first meets sandor clegane. she sees him across the stands, and cannot help but marvel at him. sandor, as he does, takes her stare as one of fear or disgust. also at the tourney, she meets jaime lannister. in her eyes, jaime represents what a knight should be. she finds him beautiful, honorable. the two develop an almost unspoken connection. one night, as she waits for jaime outside of the garden, she is interrupted by gregor clegane. before gregor can get very close, sandor steps between them, telling gregor that his king was looking for him. lyarra would not see sandor again for years to come, (nor jaime for that matter) but she would never forget the boy with a scarred cheek.everything after that happens in almost a blur for lyarra. not long after the tourney, she, benjen, and lyanna made the journey to riverrun for brandon's wedding. only, they made it to an inn — before their trip stopped altogether. lyarra had been sharpening her own blade outside of the inn, when she saw lyanna attempting to sneak out. lyanna begged her to let her go, to allow her to be free of robert baratheon. lyarra, against her better judgment, wants only for her sister to be free.everyone knows what happens next. lyanna runs away with rhaegar. brandon (who promises lyarra that he will return) goes to king's landing, alongside their father, to demand for lyanna's return. instead, they are both slain, and king aerys promptly calls for robert and ned's heads as well. after the war, when ned finally returns, lyarra did not dare ask what happened to her sister. the moment that ned returned alone, save for the babe tucked into his arms, she knew what had happened to lyanna. from that day on, lyarra swore to herself that she would take care of the babe that ned had returned with. jon. jon, with grey eyes — and thick black curls. in her eyes, she raised the boy. he was hers in everything but name.only a few years after, she meets a clan of free folk – living in the woods, just outside of winterfell. lyarra, ever curious, finds her way into the group. they are led by a man named gogni, a man with long blondish-brown hair, braided to his knees. since lyanna's death, she'd demanded a sliver of her own freedom. she was allowed to learn how to use a blade properly, and would not be forced to marry any man against her will. ned, unwilling to see the same thing happen twice, begrudgingly agreed.after the initial bit of distrust, the free folk began to allow lyarra to join them at the fire. more often than not, gogni was at her side — or a younger boy, one who couldn't have been more than 8 years jon's elder. tormund, she'd heard, was his name. with thick, fire-red hair. tormund carried a small child around with him everywhere he went. one with blonde hair, but the same piercing blue eyes as tormund. tormund's sister, she'd learned.lyarra had felt love before only once. with petyr, it was a complicated mix of emotions. she loved him because he was the first person to try to understand her. she was uncertain if there was more to it than that. with gogni, however, there was something else. gogni made her feel free. one night, as she planned to bring jon back to the camp to introduce him to gogni, she came back to a raging fire. the camp was in flames. 'the crows' (as the free folk called them), or the watch, had come. she found gogni first, bleeding profusely and fading by the second. losing gogni was different than what losing brandon or lyanna felt like. it crushed her completely. she found tormund soon after, fighting off two men with the babe still tucked against him. using what she had been taught, lyarra picked up a weapon from one of the fallen free folk, and attacked the men. part of her felt guilty for killing 'one of her own' but the thought of losing tormund after everything was too much to bare. tormund handed the babe to her, running off to fight the rest of the men.lyarra returned to winterfell like that. disheveled, covered in dirt and blood – with the babe in her arms. she named the girl reyne, and promised herself that she would not let anything happen to her. she would keep her children safe, no matter the cost.

season one : for the past few years, lyarra has dedicated her time to raising her children – alongside aiding catelyn with her own. she spends most of her time with jon, if she's not trying to convince ned to allow her to train arya to use a blade. the death of jon arryn came as a shock to the entire family. lyarra did not know the man well, but she knew of the love that ned had for him. when the king came to visit, she knew it was only a matter of time before ned would have to leave. what she did not expect, was the man serving the king. the man who rode in behind prince joffrey, face covered with the helm of a hound. she could hardly take her eyes off of him, save to glance over at her children. that following night, lyarra snuck out of the feast (coming as a shock to no one). only, she was disturbed before she could escape properly, by tyrion lannister. against her better judgement, she allows him to sit at her side. and before she realizes it, the two are too drunk to stand.they're interrupted by the same figure from before, who now has the helm tucked into the crook of his elbow. she recognized him the moment she met his eyes. sandor clegane. the same man who saved her from his brother all those years ago. and in an instant, she knew he recognized her as well. the next few days of the king's visit are spent with tedious conversation throughout the day, and blindingly drunk evenings. one morning in particular, lyarra awoke alongside tyrion in the kennels, lying on one of the dogs.just as she'd expected, ned came to her the following evening to tell her that he was leaving to king's landing. robert was looking for a hand. what she did not expect, however, was for ned to ask her to join him. he needed help with the girls, and catelyn had to stay in winterfell. when bran fell, it was solidifed in her mind that she would have to go. jon intended to join the night's watch (something that aggravated her to no end) while reyne would now help with bran in any way that she could.with a tearful goodbye, lyarra leaves winterfell at her brother's side. she was reluctant to leave her daughter, especially now that bran was injured. she saw jon off, staying at his side until the last second.the remainder of the journey to king's landing is just as hectic as she'd expect. she remains at arya's side throughout everything. when ned is forced to put lady down, lyarra can hardly help her own tears. sandor finds her later that night, drinking her sorrows away. just as she had before, she drinks through the night with him at her side. he promises her, as he escorts her back to her room, that he'll keep her safe in king's landing. something that she's not sure how to trust.once they reach king's landing, lyarra officially decides that the south is no place for her. it is only when ned tells her that petyr is on the small council, that lyarra finally feels as if she has a purpose. she all but chases the man down, demanding to know everything that has happened. she's overjoyed, delighted to see her best friend once again. it's only when she notices that he doesn't appear to be sharing in her joy, that she thinks something might be off.she's assigned a handmaiden, aianna, and at once lyarra begins to adore her. aianna is unwilling to share any personal information, but she implores lyarra to share anything that she'd like. the girl accompanies her to the hand's tourney, staying at her side throughout it. petyr sits on her other side, something that earns her a side eye from ned. just before sandor's part in the tourney, she runs off – finding his tent with ease. she gives the man her favor, dashing off before he can say anything else. in return, he gives her a flower (one that is actually handed to ned at first, who is INCREDIBLY confused) despite how cordial things are at the start, lyarra and petyr quickly begin to argue. he begins to spin the story of sandor's burn to sansa, and at once lyarra tells him to shut up.aaand just as quickly, everything goes downhill. catelyn takes tyrion prisoner. jaime attacks ned because of it (killing jory and injuring ned in the process. note: he is incredibly reluctant to come near lyarra and even asks petyr to bring her inside to keep her from harm). she slaps petyr. then promptly breaks down in his arms. robert solidifies his reliance on her and ned. ned is reinstated as hand of the king. robert orders sandor to keep lyarra safe. robert then DIES. ned is taken prisoner. arya vanishes. cersei tells lyarra to tell ned to admit his treason. varys brings lyarra to ned. ned admits his "treason". then he dies anyway. lyarra runs to his side, sandor pulls her back. lyarra decides that nothing matters besides sansa's safety. everything is crazy.

season two : if you thought things couldn't get worse you have not been paying attention. meryn trant has become lyarra's personal nightmare. he takes every chance he can get to torment her. none of it matters to lyarra as long as she can keep sansa safe. some nights, sandor drinks with her. other nights he just stands outside of her room and acts like she can't see him.she has also become rather close with one of petyr's "employees", ros. she half-recognized the girl from winterfell once or twice, normally at theon's side. ros was her one light in king's landing. petyr had become something that she couldn't quite understand.then, tyrion returns! with a strange man (who has an even stranger hairline) and before lyarra knows it, she's back to alcoholism. every single night, she drinks with bronn and tyrion. some nights, ros joins. other nights, they're accompanied by sansa's 'new handmaiden', shae. lyarra, in truth, is just grateful to see her friend again. they become her rock, in a way.then, in true fashion, everything gets bad again. sansa has her first period, shae and lyarra are intent on keeping this a secret. aianna catches them and runs to tell the queen. not only that, but now stannis baratheon is set on attacking the capital. lyarra assists tyrion with the preparations, scouring for information where she can. the night that he attacks the capital, sandor comes to her room. as mentioned before, the two drink together often. it isn't unusual for him to be there. only this time, it feels different. sandor could die. she could die. the two end up getting into an argument. it ends with lyarra pulling him close, begging him to come back to her. after that, lyarra is determined to stick by sansa's side. she sees the king off, alongside bronn and tyrion – who end up bickering to the point that she rolls her eyes.once they're safely hidden away in maegor's holdfast, sansa and lyarra spend the entirety of their evening at cersei's side. it's only when lancel comes in to tell cersei that the battle has been lost, that they flee. shae forces lyarra, sansa, and aianna out of the room at once. lyarra tells sansa to bolt her door, saying that she'll knock twice so that she knows it's her. only, as lyarra approaches her own door, aianna pauses. lyarra, noticing how the girl is shaking, approaches her tentatively. all at once, she notices the pain flooding through her. aianna had stabbed her. she apologizes profusely, sobbing into her hands as she says 'she told me to. i didn't want to. she made me do it.' and quickly stabs herself.lyarra, feeling her vision fading, slides down the wall. a figure comes barreling out of her own door, dropping to her side. sandor, she realizes, had been waiting for her. she begs him to leave. to take sansa, and go. sandor is unbelievably angry (whether it is directed more at himself or aianna, no one can be sure. but. anyways) but he agrees eventually. he pulls lyarra into a bruising kiss, and stomps away. lyarra is content with the knowledge that at the very least, if she has to die – she knows sansa will be safe. she only wishes she could know the same thing in regards to her own children. or arya. or robb, rickon, or bran. any of her family.season three: hell on earth. lyarra, shocked that she is even alive, wakes up to find that she has been moved to a much smaller room. and, she's sharing with tyrion! wonderful! it's only when sansa comes to visit her that she realizes how poorly things went. sansa had told sandor to go without her. great. tyrion was no longer hand. tywin lannister had returned to king's landing. things aren't great.the only light to come out of the situation lied in the fact that sansa no longer had to marry joffrey. she turns to petyr (against her better judgment) to get sansa out of king's landing. initially, his plan is to take her with him when he leaves. he's lord of harrenhal now, and is set to marry lysa arryn. lyarra, who knows at the very least that petyr would never hurt HER, begs her to take sansa instead. petyr promises to find a way to take them both, but agrees all the same.the presence of margaery tyrell provides a great comfort to lyarra. though she could not wholly trust the girl, nor her grandmother, she was glad that sansa had someone to spend her time with – besides either herself or shae. sansa and margaery plan sansa's betrothal to loras (which.. lyarra simply smiled and nodded at), while lyarra spends her miserable days drinking with bronn and tyrion. sandor believes her to be dead. she has no real idea of whether or not he's alive. she spends her time brooding.then, she's given a real reason to brood! how wonderful! tyrion is set to marry sansa (WEIRD. LYARRA HATES HER LIFE) and! her nephew, and sister by law are dead! things are really looking up (loud incorrect buzzer). lyarra and tyrion search for any alternative option, and find nothing. she tries to comfort sansa to the best of her ability, telling her that tyrion is not a bad man – that she knows he doesn't want it either. but there is little she can do to help the situation.and on TOP of that, ros is killed! by joffrey! because petyr sells her to joffrey. as a punishment for spying with varys. (she knows none of this, mind you. she knows only what she is told)bad things just keep happening. this season is just a horrible time for lyarra and sansa. mostly sansa.

season four: somehow this season is just filled with even more drinking. lyarra is almost always at tyrion's side at this point. and now, jaime is back! jaime who now has one hand and still will not speak to her. not to mention petyr, who is just .. gone! without a word! (though, admittedly lyarra is less concerned with that. she only hopes that he still intends to take sansa from king's landing)joffrey is set to marry margaery soon, as if they needed another wedding. lyarra watches bronn and jaime's training, despite jaime's arguments against it. sometimes she joins in, but more often than not she is content just watching.fortunately, she meets new people this season. namely ellaria sand, who lyarra just instantly adores. the two hit it off like wildfire (wildfire.. sigh) and from then on, if she isn't with tyrion or bronn – she's at ellaria's side. we love blossoming friendships.then, all at once. boom. joffrey margaery wedding time. lyarra sits to sansa's left. she knows, the moment that joffrey begins to cough, that something is wrong. part of her rejoices at the fact that joffrey collapses. only, it fades at once as cersei begins to shout. lyarra feels a man tap at her shoulder, a man she vaguely recognizes as 'ser dontos'. he's come to take sansa and lyarra, he says. he can take them to safety. lyarra battles herself for a minute. she could leave now. maybe, if they were fast enough, no one would notice. only, she meets jaime's eyes across the field. just as they had before, they know what the other is thinking. she pushes sansa ahead, telling her to go.thus, she ends up imprisoned with tyrion! everything sucks! life is horrible! lyarra and tyrion deny everything all throughout their trial, but it doesn't matter. shae comes out as a witness to the court, claiming that lyarra, sansa, and tyrion were plotting the king's death. eventually, jaime bargains a deal in their favor, and in true tyrion fashion – he blows it by screaming at the court. he wants a trial by combat! wonderful. their fates are tied, so. this is great. not to mention, the crown's champion is gregor clegane. isn't that wonderful. they turn to bronn! no bronn. he's been bought out. jaime? no. he has one hand. then, oberyn steps up. he'll fight for them.ellaria promises lyarra that oberyn will win for them both. it's a tearful moment. the audience 'awws.' then, seconds later, the audience 'awws' again. but not a. aww sweet. an aww his eyes are popped out. gregor clegane just killed oberyn martell. tyrion and lyarra are now going to be found guilty. they failed. things are bad.then, the following evening, jaime comes down to their cell. they think for a moment that it's their final moments, but he stops. he tells them to go down the hall and knock on a door twice. lyarra, overwhelmed, pulls jaime into a hug. she knew at his heart he was still a good man. tyrion, again, in tyrion fashion, does not listen. instead, he stalks up to his father's room and promptly kills his father AND shae. what the hell, sure.when they reach the room, they're met with varys. what the hell, sure pt. 2. varys sneaks them through the castle, stopping at the port. only tyrion can come with varys. lyarra, on the other hand, has a horse waiting for her outside the city walls. he doesn't even need to advise her on where to go. she knows she needs to head to the vale. she and tyrion share a tearful goodbye. everything is crazy.

season five+: TBA. still deciding this. but i do know that she ends up in the vale. when she finally arrives, she discovers that ?? reyne is there ?? reyne, who now has thick red (dyed) hair. and looks almost identical to sansa. wonder what's going to happen there...i also do know that jaime and lyarra reunite when jaime is sent to take riverrun. this is also when she reunites with edmure and works it out on the remix.

here i'll be describing some of lyarra's basic relationships with the other characters! obviously i am 100% open to developing with people & altering these dynamics for specific portrayals. this is just a basic description for them!

&& some of these are subject to change as i finish my fic!

FAMILY ;
brandon stark: lyarra's safe place. at one point she breaks down in his arms because he makes a joke about her marrying edmure tully. they weren't INCREDIBLY close, but she loved her brother so much. he promised her that he would come home, and he didn't.
eddard stark: the man who insists on making lyarra's life incredibly difficult. lyarra and ned weren't really close at all until lyanna's death. she always found her brother admirable, but they didn't see each other often. it wasn't until they realized they were truly on their own, (besides benjen, who then proceeded to LEAVE. love you benjen sorry) that they began to depend on one another.

arya stark: throughout her life, lyarra had heard rumblings that arya was similar to her sister, lyanna. and maybe in a way that was true. but more than anything, arya reminded her of herself. she was insistent on teaching the girl how to wield a blade. she was the first of the stark children that lyarra truly developed a bond with, and there will always be love in her heart for her.jon snow: her boy. from the moment that she held jon, she knew that she would do anything for him. in her eyes, that is her son. there is nothing in the world that she loves more than her children. part of it does come from how similar he looks to lyanna. she looks at him at times and is met with the face of her sister. but even more than that, it's his heart.reyne: her daughter! oh, she adores reyne more than anything. nothing frightened her more than leaving reyne behind in winterfell, but at the same time she knew that the girl could handle herself. sometimes she looks at her and thinks of what her life would have been like if she had simply gone beyond the wall with gogni, and took jon with her (of course). but she wouldn't give up reyne for anything. in her eyes, that is her daughter as well.

lyanna stark: lyarra's twin. the other half of her soul. the two had their differences, but for a time there was no one in the world that lyarra loved more than her sister. she would have (and quite literally did) done anything for her, and the sake of her freedom. lyanna will haunt her until the day that she dies.benjen stark: her closest sibling, besides lyanna. she was with benjen every minute of every day. the two annoyed one another beyond relief. the day that benjen told her that he was leaving was one of the most difficult days of her life.her relationship with most of the stark children is the same. she was not overly close with robb, rickon, or bran. but she did love and care for them as an aunt would.sansa stark: for years, the two did not have a very close bond. lyarra could not find a common ground for the two of them to meet on. she loved the girl, and cared for her as a child, but they could not find anything to relate on. it wasn't until they traveled to king's landing, that lyarra truly began to understand her. she would have given her life for sansa in an instant. nothing mattered more to her than keeping sansa safe, keeping her from joffrey or anyone else who wanted to harm her.catelyn stark (tully): very back and forth. when they initially met in riverrun, catelyn intimidated lyarra beyond relief. she wasn't certain how to approach her, so for the most part she stared from a distance (she's normal okay). but as they got older, lyarra did feel a sort of dependency on the woman. she lost a sister, and was almost looking for one in catelyn. that being said, the two had fundamentally different philosophies. they disagreed on virtually everything. lyarra did care for her, greatly, but to say that they were close would be a stretch of the word.theon greyjoy: how do i even begin. initially, lyarra wasn't sure how to feel about the boy. maybe she pitied him, she wasn't sure. his relationship with jon didn't make it any better. but she did care for him. he was a nuisance, and she loved him all the same.

FRIENDS ;
petyr baelish: where do i even start. petyr was lyarra's very first friend, and the person who she feels understands her the best (even now). for the first time, she felt as if she found someone who could see her for who she was – who believed that she could accomplish what she wanted. the two had such big dreams for who they wanted to be. lyarra was devastated when she had to leave riverrun, knowing that she wouldn't see petyr again for many years. she wrote him every month for the next few years, never once receiving a response. when they reunite in king's landing, lyarra can instantly tell that something is off about him. he's not the boy that she once knew. he's something else. inside, she can sometimes see flickers of him. a longing glance, a poorly hidden pout. she feels as if she understands him, so she doesn't fear him as she should. unfortunately, petyr uses that to his advantage. he never once causes lyarra direct harm, but those around her are not exempt. they have a very complicated relationship. lyarra has an overwhelming amount of love for him, and yet she knows she cannot trust him.
tyrion lannister: definitely her rock. the one person who seems to have lyarra's best interests at heart. he's the one person who she feels wholly comfortable with, safe with. over time, she becomes incredibly protective over him. i would say he becomes her best friend, but it's not something that she entirely acknowledges. it's moreso in the back of her head.bronn: same as above, but they are not as .. nice (??) to one another as she and tyrion are. they bicker constantly. they're almost never on the same page. but she knows she can trust bronn.tormund: okay. she loves tormund. he's like her weird nephew that says really strange stuff at times that she doesn't quite understand. the two are almost family, (with their previous bond + her raising reyne as her daughter) and tormund will not let her forget that.

ellaria sand: oh she ADORED ellaria. the two got along instantly, the moment they met. throughout the years, she only become more protective over her.

ros: the one who opens her eyes to how petyr truly is. at times she believes that ros might be the only sane person in king's landing. without her, she would have lost her mind ages ago. lyarra adores her, and would defend her any day.aianna: this is. a complicated spot that i have put her in. lyarra looks at aianna in a positive light for the love that she has for her. she knows that aianna cared for her once, even despite what she did. she found a sister in aianna, and lost her just as quickly. i think there will always be love in her heart for her.davos seaworth: what a random one, right? davos comes out of nowhere. i almost want to say that he sort of takes a fatherly role in her life (despite the fact that they're not THAT far apart in age) the respect that he has for her son is partially the reason that she finds comfort with him. he is someone that she trusts completely.edmure tully: oh this is another complicated one. lyarra HATED edmure for years. she actually wanted that boy gone. the thought of marrying him had her bawling her eyes out. honestly, it's strictly because of his relationship with petyr. she was very biased against anyone who didn't like petyr. (besides brandon, but i'd like to note that she has no idea of the fight that transpired) and it really isn't until they reunite when edmure is held captive, that lyarra realizes that edmure.. is kind of just a guy. and all of a sudden she feels bad for everything that happened. it's a very.. progressive relationship.jaime: there is so much to unpack here. they have an INSTANT connection when they first meet. lyarra finds jaime so fascinating. they have the sort of bond where they can communicate with only their eyes, as if they know what the other is thinking. only, when they meet again in king's landing, jaime is almost reluctant to be around her. and he continues on that same path. he won't meet her eye. he avoids her at all costs. it all comes to a head when jaime attacks ned. he refuses to come near lyarra, shouting for petyr to bring her inside. from that moment on, lyarra swears that she hates him. it really isn't until season four, that she sees another side of him again. when tyrion and lyarra are put on trial for the death of joffrey, jaime breaks them both out. it's sort of a turning point for lyarra, as she realizes once more that there might be something more to him. they reunite again once jaime comes to riverrun, and even then jaime is reluctant to harm her in any way (allowing her to sneak out of camp unnoticed). she finds jaime incredibly .. perplexing. she wants the best for him, i think.

ENEMIES ;
lysa arryn: enemy is a stretch by far, but i wasn't sure where else to put her. the two do not get along from the start. lyarra pities her, and lysa despises her. unbeknownst to lyarra, every single time that she wrote petyr a letter – lysa burned them. that girl does not like her! they could've worked it out on the remix i feel.
cersei lannister: enemy here is also a stretch, but. from the beginning, they never once got along. lyarra tried her hardest to understand the woman, and overtime she learned to – but that didn't make things any easier. she couldn't help but respect and fear cersei in equal measure.

robert baratheon: oh lyarra hated him BAD. even when they were younger, she wanted him gone. she only respected him out of the love that she had for ned, but there was no part of her that liked robert at all. he did not deserve her sister.ramsay bolton: well, obviously. the man who SPOILER FOR THE FIC IF YOU CARE TO READ!!!!!!!!! killed her daughter. she despised roose for what he did to robb. but that was nothing compared to the hatred she had for ramsay. killing him wasn't enough. she wanted worse for him.

there are some obvious ones here as well that don't really require much of a description. gregor clegane, joffrey baratheon, tywin lannister, euron greyjoy, roose bolton, alliser thorne, etc.

MISC ;
renly baratheon: she wanted him to be king. she fully supported his claim. that was her king.
daenerys targaryen: very mixed feelings. because of the bond that daenerys and jon share (platonic soulmates who dreamshare in my fic), she respects her. and she knows what it is like to lose a child. but she's also wary of her. her respect for daenerys is 100% earned by the final season though. she learns to care for her greatly over time.

podrick payne: never really knew pod well enough to be his friend, but she cared for him – as he was someone that tyrion cared for, and was a part of the group.brienne: sort of the same thing as above. lyarra finds brienne to be incredibly brave. she admires her completely. the two were never all that close, but she does want the best for her.margaery tyrell: she found margaery incredibly difficult to trust at first, but she grew to care for her greatly due to how much love the girl had for sansa.shae: girl, so confusing.
